WEIMA WL 4 – A tried-and-tested shredder for trade and industry

  • Single-shaft system with horizontal slide gate
  • High throughput
  • Can be seamlessly integrated into production lines
  • Suitable for continuous operation
  • Widely available
  • Versatile

The WL 4 single-shaft shredder is a compact yet powerful industrial shredder designed for the reliable shredding of waste and residual materials, particularly wood and paper. The machine is used in thousands of wood-processing plants, manufacturing companies and recycling applications worldwide and is synonymous with proven, practical technology. Thanks to its extremely robust construction, the WL 4 impresses with its long service life and reliable continuous operation – even under demanding operating conditions or when used outdoors.

As a standard-production shredder, it offers excellent value for money and a high level of investment security. Optionally equipped with an 11 kW drive, the WL 4 may also be eligible for subsidies, for example under BAFA programmes.

Below you will find an overview of the technical specifications, possible applications and available options for this proven single-shaft shredder.

Product features

Precise cutting with high throughput thanks to the profiled V-rotor

The V-rotor, developed in-house by WEIMA, is suitable for universal use and is made from solid material. Its aggressive feed mechanism, featuring up to two rows of blades, guarantees high throughput with low power consumption. It can be fitted with hardened steel cutting blades with a blade length of 40 mm. These blades can be turned over several times as they wear, which drastically reduces maintenance costs.

No material bridges thanks to the free-cutting funnel design

The hopper serves several purposes. Firstly, it is used to feed the material to be shredded into the machine – either manually, mechanically or via a conveyor belt. The generous opening also makes it easy to load very large items. However, what is crucial for shredding is its special design, which is rounded at the front and thus effectively prevents material jams. Even with bulky items, the shredder clears itself automatically. If required, both hopper extensions and lids with gas springs are available.

Reliable material feed with a load-dependent slide valve

The slide, which moves horizontally back and forth via a hydraulic system, feeds the material to the rotor. With WEIMA, it can be controlled or cycled fully automatically, depending on the load. It can, of course, also be operated manually if required. For even more aggressive feeding, we recommend additional serrated plates and hold-down devices, which keep even bulky and long parts securely in place. A shock valve fitted to the hydraulic cylinder absorbs any impacts from the drawer, thereby ensuring a longer service life.

Consistent grinding results thanks to a flexible interchangeable screen

Adjust the screen to suit your needs. The smaller the hole diameter, the finer the crushed material that is discharged. Screens can be easily swapped and are bolted in place as standard.

Hydraulics with optimum protection, integrated into the machine frame

Integrating the sensitive components of a hydraulic system into the machine frame offers many advantages. Not only is the system protected from dust, dirt and other external factors such as the weather, but it also makes the machine even more compact when installed. A separate service access panel ensures easy access for maintenance.

Discharge the material cleanly using suction, a screw conveyor or a conveyor belt

Depending on your requirements and the frame design (raised machine with a conveyor belt opening or side outlet), you have the option of discharging the shredded material via air extraction, a discharge screw or a conventional conveyor belt. With experience gained from many thousands of machines on the market, we are also experts in conveyor technology and can provide you with a turnkey solution from a single source.

Effectively absorb vibrations with sturdy rubber feet

Vibration-damping machine feet ensure stability and help to significantly reduce disruptive vibrations in the surrounding area. As the machine does not need to be anchored to the floor, installation is particularly flexible and convenient.

Powerful drive with WEIMA WAP gearbox

Instead of purchasing standard components, we have been manufacturing our tried-and-tested WAP gearboxes ourselves for many years at our German production facilities. This in-house development ensures maximum robustness even under the most demanding machine conditions. The electromechanical drive, which uses a V-belt and a powerful electric motor, is also optimally protected against impacts and contaminants thanks to a built-in vibration damper. This counteracts increased wear and extends the service life of a machine.

Durable rotor bearings thanks to the stepped design

Due to the extreme stresses it is subjected to during crushing operations, a rotor bearing must be built to be particularly robust. To prevent dust or foreign matter from entering the bearing, we have positioned it away from the machine frame. This also makes it very easy to maintain and readily accessible.

Shredding wine barrels using the WEIMA WL 4 shredder at Holzmanufaktur Alsenz
At the Alsenz Wood Workshop, old wine barrels are given a new lease of life and transformed into unique, handcrafted pieces of furniture. The barrels are carefully dismantled and the staves meticulously refurbished – though not all of them are suitable for this purpose. Rejected barrel staves and other wood scraps are shredded in a WEIMA WL 4 shredder. Furthermore, all woodworking machines are connected to a central extraction system. The fine dust collected in the process is compressed into compact briquettes using a WEIMA C 150 briquetting press. Both the wood chips produced during shredding and the briquettes are burned in the company’s own heating system – thereby supplying heat to both the workshop and an adjacent residential building.

Making good use of wood waste: Carpentry firm heats workshop and homes with the WL 6 shredder
At Sucker Holzbau GbR, a large amount of wood waste is generated every day. Instead of disposing of this material, it is reused in a sustainable way: the wood waste is shredded using a WL 6 shredder and then used to generate energy in a wood chip heating system. This provides efficient and sustainable heating not only for the workshops and offices, but also for three detached houses. The project demonstrates how wood processing, energy efficiency and the circular economy fit together perfectly.

Wood waste shredding at Holzkunst Scholz
At Holzkunst Scholz, Marcus Scholz combines traditional craftsmanship with creative design. In his workshop, he creates high-quality woodwork and unique, handcrafted pieces, driven by a deep passion for wood as a material. Marcus Scholz is also particularly well known for his chainsaw carving courses, in which participants learn to carve impressive wooden sculptures from tree trunks. This process regularly produces wood scraps and offcuts. The WEIMA WL 4 shredder reliably shreds this wood waste – from both the workshop and the carving courses – and prepares it for sensible reuse.

At Ulrich Althoff GmbH Carpentry, wood waste is generated daily as a by-product of production. This wood waste is efficiently shredded using the WEIMA WL 4 single-shaft shredder and a hopper extension. This enables large quantities of wood waste from the carpentry workshop to be reliably processed and subsequently recycled or used for energy generation. The WL 4 shredder has been specially developed for small to medium-sized wood processing businesses and impresses with its robust construction, high throughput and reliable shredding performance.
