Every year, around 10 million tons of waste wood are generated in Germany that need to be disposed of or recycled. This includes first and foremost waste from the construction and demolition industries, followed by industrial waste wood, so-called used wood from bulky waste and municipal waste – and, of course, packaging residues such as pallets or crates. After collection and sorting, there are two options: Recycle scrap wood and use it as a basis for the production of particleboard. Or use it thermally to generate energy | heat.

In both cases, WEIMA's single- or multi-stage shredding technology is used to either coarsely crush the waste wood first or to reduce it to a homogeneous chip size. If required, we can also supply the appropriate conveying technology, including metal separation via magnet, or an entire heating system, or we will be happy to advise you.

WOOD You Believe This Was a Barrel? WEIMA WL 4 barrel staves shredding
At Holzmanufaktur Alsenz, old wine barrels are given a second life and transformed into unique handcrafted furniture. The barrels are carefully dismantled, and the staves are carefully reworked – but not all can be used. These rejected barrel staves, along with other wood offcuts, are shredded in a WEIMA WL 4 shredder.

Rather than let it simply sit in a studio until the next series is filmed, it is of course dismantled and taken away for storage. And sometimes they need to be recycled. That's when a WEIMA shredders comes into play.

What is waste wood? Origin and characteristics
Waste wood refers to used wood products as well as wood composites and materials such as packaging, furniture, construction and demolition wood. It does not include uncontaminated industrial waste wood (e.g. sawdust) or forest waste wood. Special cases are, for example, firewood or wood from hydraulic engineering. The Waste Wood Ordinance (AltholzV) regulates disposal, recycling and divides waste wood into four categories (A I-IV) according to its pollutant load. In addition, there is PCB waste wood with polychlorinated biphenyls. Priority is given to material recycling (e.g. chipboard production) over energy recovery. WEIMA offers a suitable shredding solution for all waste wood classes, from A1 to A4.

Attention! Contaminants!
Waste wood is part of the circular economy and a valuable resource, but can contain harmful substances such as coatings, binding agents, paints or wood preservatives that make it difficult to recycle. The level of contamination depends on the product: railroad sleepers and electricity pylons are usually fully impregnated, while wood preservatives are applied to the surface for home use. Varnishes and paints may contain heavy metals or plasticizers. Not all waste wood is contaminated - often only impurities such as metal staples, fittings, concrete, plaster or plastic are found, which are removed by shredding and subsequent separation.

Energy recovery from waste wood
In Germany, 80 waste wood power plants use around 7.7 million tons of waste wood to generate around million tons of waste wood annually to generate around 800 MW of energy (calorific value: 11,000-15,000 kJ/kg). Incineration is regulated by the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG): A l and A Il wood may be burned in small combustion plants up to 30 kW without a permit; contaminated wood requires special conditions. Despite the more environmentally friendly energy generation compared to primary sources, material use has priority in terms of cascade use.

Material recycling of waste wood | Used wood becomes a new product
For material or energy recycling, waste wood is first shredded to a uniform chip size using shredders. This is crucial for the quality of chipboard. In Germany, an average chipboard consists of around a third of category A l and A lI waste wood, in compliance with legal limits for harmful substances. In Italy, the proportion is up to 90%, in Denmark 61%. Its use in OSB or MDF boards has been rare to date.
